I encourage an atmosphere of relaxation and play during our session with as
many breaks as necessary to help get your photos as perfect as
possible. There is no time limit on my sessions (though they generally take between 45 minutes to an hour unless it's a newborn session or a wedding) so there is no need to feel rushed. I tend to stay away from posed pictures, but they do occasionally serve a purpose. However, I feel the more you talk, play and interact in a natural way with your kids/significant other, the more I can really capture the essence of who you are, those "alive" moments that define you, both individually and as a family.
Clients often ask me about what to wear. Honestly, this is up to you. I recommend you wear what you love and/or what is comfortable. I think photos should be about the people, places and things we love and clothes are often a part of that. Some people's personalities really shine through their clothing and I WANT that in photos! While there is nothing I would tell you not to wear, there are some things I steer people away from, in family portraits in particular. I recommend you stay away from wearing all the same color (whether this means one person in one color from head to toe or everyone in your family wearing the same color and blending together). Find fun ways to run a color theme, but don't be matchy matchy. Instead, try to find complimentary colors or mix and match the same colors in different ways on different people: ie. perhaps everyone wears denim, but some wear jeans, maybe one has a jean jacket and then perhaps a red striped shirt is put on someone, a red scarf or jacket on another, or maybe red shoes on someone else. With little kids, I sometimes think it's better if there is no writing/logos on their shirts unless it is something you specifically want photographed. Other than those few things, I think the sky's the limit and we can always make adjustments at the shoot or please feel free to email ahead of time or bring options with if you are questioning something.
The most important thing in our session is that you aren't stressed out. Play with your kids, have fun with your fiancee or partner, enjoy the time with family and leave the rest to me!
